Bauhinia purpurea - Leguminosae

                Bauhinia was named after the botanists Johann and Caspar Bauhin who lived in the 16th century.

                B.purpurea is the species ( among about 300 others ) with the largest flowers ( 10 to 15 cm  in diameter ).delicately fragrant

                The flowers are reminiscent of Orchids and the common name for Bauhina is Orchid Tree.

                With its delicately fragrant, large flowers and its uniquely shaped leaves this is one of the best tropical ornamental shrubs.

                Rooted cuttings which are producing flowers abundantly are available.
