Calathea zebrina - Marantaceae
The genus Calathea belongs to the family of Prayer Plants ( Marantaceae ) and is actually
related to Heliconia and other plants in the order Zingiberales.
Calatheas are cultivated for their beautiful foliage as shown on the picture of C.zebrina above
and also for their flowers. These Perennials thrive in light shade to shade and require a well drained
yet moist soil and regular watering. Low humidity and direct sunlight will cause leaf burn.
Calathea zebrina grows about 3' tall ( 90cm ) and is a very impressive foliage plant because of its
velvety leaf surface and contrasting color pattern.
