Calathea zebrina - Marantaceae

                The genus Calathea belongs to the family of Prayer Plants ( Marantaceae ) and is actually

                related to Heliconia and other plants in the order Zingiberales.

                Calatheas are cultivated for their beautiful foliage as shown on the picture of C.zebrina above

                and also for their flowers. These Perennials thrive in light shade to shade and require a well drained

                yet moist soil and regular watering. Low humidity and direct sunlight will cause leaf burn.

                Calathea zebrina grows about 3' tall ( 90cm ) and is a very impressive foliage plant because of its 

                velvety leaf surface and contrasting color pattern.
